Need An Education In Web Analytics?

July 3, 2007

Lately I’ve been looking into getting more of an education when it comes to website analytics because anything that I’ve recently learned about Web Analytics has been completely self discovered. Coming from a background in Computer Science I am naturally interested in this area of learning but I know many people out there couldn’t care less to look into statistical data to draw conclusions about their business but your competition may think otherwise.

Many Colleges and Universities do not currently have courses geared towards the Web Analytics professional so it makes it next to impossible to seek out a former education for a skill set such as this. In my personal opinion the look of the site is important but how a site functions or is supposed to function is of far more importance and this is also known as Usability, Optimization and Analytics.

So where does one go for an education in Web Analytics?

I’ve done a good bit of research about this and in Canada there is only one University that offers this education (to the best of my knowledge). University of British Columbia (or UBC as it’s affectionately known) offers a program that includes 4 core courses in the study of Web Analytics that were created with the support of the Web Analytics Association or “WAA”.

These courses include…

  • Introduction to Web Analytics
  • Web Analytics for Site Optimization
  • Measuring Marketing Campaigns Online
  • Creating and Managing the Analytical Business Culture

Analytics are a very important part of online business development as I’ve stated a few times before and more companies are strategizing using the latest analytics based information for their benefit. As a web designer or developer, having a solid understanding of these principles is becoming a key to understanding that good design or development is only the first step in development a web site that performs highly effectively.
